Guerrilla Marketing Books
Guerrilla Marketing has become the most read series of books in business history. This first book was written in 1984 by Jay Conrad Levinson while he was teaching marketing at UC Berkley. Almost every business owner has read at least one Guerrilla Marketing book, while others have a library of the books and have mastered Guerrilla Marketing Strategies, Tactics and Techniques. Some people have assumed that Guerrilla Marketing is only for small businesses however many Fortune 500 businesses have successfully implemented Guerrilla Marketing Strategies. One thing Guerrilla Marketing does for small business is help them make big time profits.

One of the many ways Guerrilla Marketing is different from traditional marketing is the famous 100 Guerrilla Marketing Weapons.  Each marketing plan uses a wide variety of weapons instead of just one. Instead of relying on direct marketing only, Guerrilla Marketing will also use email marketing, internet marketing, search engine marketing, web site marketing, and 95 other weapons.

I have always called the Internet "The Great Equalizer, it can make small companies big and big companies small." Guerrilla Marketing is 50% like that. It can make small companies big but it can also make big companies bigger!

I have personally been a student of Guerrilla Marketing since the first book was written in 1984 when  I was starting my new business. Today I am a Certified Guerrilla Marketing Coach and have had the pleasure of working with Jay Levinson and helping him train business owners from around the world develop their own Guerrilla Marketing Attacks. I will add my personal notes, in the way of mini book reviews, on the books that I have read.

Here are the three books that are necessary for anyone to master Guerrilla Marketing, everyone needs to read the first one, Guerrilla Marketing.

This is the book where it all started. It is filled with time tested wisdom on marketing and business in general. Unless there is a specific topic you need this is the book to start with. Have a pencil with you to do a lot of underlining, you will wear this book out coming back to it.

This book was written to give business owners specific marketing insights, 100 of them, to help them master the process. Then transforming their mastery into honest-to-goodness profits.

You need your pencil for this one since there is  a worksheet to help you create your Guerrilla Marketing Plan. Co-authored with Seth Godin, this book has guidelines for using a lot of different marketing tools, also known as weapons.

What did Jay Levinson do before he he wrote Guerrilla Marketing? Jay Conrad Levinson focused the genius of his marketing and advertising talents to his job, working with Leo Burnett in Chicago. He has many incredible accomplishments to his credit, but one really stands out. He was called on to help a brand of cigarettes that was perceived as feminine and ranked 31st. What he did was come up the "Marlboro Man" and totally changed perception, image and ranking of the brand, and took it to #1 where it has basically stayed for many years.

As you drill down in the process of mastering Guerrilla Marketing, here are the next three books.

The Guerrilla Marketing Weapons are as important to the 7 Step Marketing Plan as weapons are to an army at war. There are 100 Guerrilla Marketing Weapons to start with.  As you continue your mastery of the process you will discover the ones that hit the bulls-eye for you and also develop some of your own.

The Guerrilla Marketing Attack is it all starts coming together. A Marketing Plan is a skirmish and the attack is the war. This is a great book on the way to mastering Guerrilla Marketing. Two important chapters are the Personality of the Successful Guerrilla and 12 Tactics t consider.

The Way of the Guerrilla helps to internalize the entire process. It lays out the way that successful Guerrilla Marketers think and act. The Way of the Guerrilla will show you that to achieve and maintain personal and professional  balance is to achieve emotional and financial success.

Do you know what a meme is? It rhymes with theme and it is a symbol (not a logo) that makes people immediately brings something to mind. The blue handicapped parking symbol is a meme, as is flipping someone off. Business means include the Marlboro man, the Jolly Green Giant and the Pillsbury Dough Boy. In Guerrilla Marketing you will learn a lot about memes and why they are more effective than, and will replace logos. For more information on memes check out Guerrilla Creativity, featured below.

There is so much to Guerrilla Marketing that none of the books are redundant. You can read the same book more than once, which you should do, and get new ideas each time.

Guerrilla  Marketing Excellence explains fifty golden rules aimed at fine-tuning your marketing style. It includes how to use video, television distribution, effective networking, marketing combinations. A great tool to help find success in an increasingly competitive business environment. Guerrilla Marketing for Free. This book takes a different approach to the Guerrilla Marketing Weapons and show how you can achieve Guerrilla Marketing for free. It is also a great reference book since each weapon is grouped and  numbered so you can refer back to them again and again. Guerrilla Marketing 101 is a DVD set of Jay Levinson's training sessions. Seeing Jay Levinson speak is awesome, but it is rare and you need to travel. With a DVD you can see him more than once. I have heard him speak and also have DVDs of the same program and I still get new ideas when I watch the DVDs

Did you know that Guerrilla Marketing is now published in 41 languages?

Many of the books in the series are co-authored by Jay Levinson and other people who are experts in their fields. Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants is a great example of this. Michael McLaughlin is a very successful consultant who shows other consultants how to apply all areas of Guerrilla Marketing, including Selling to their practice. Most consultant are clueless when it comes to selling their own services.

If you are a consultant or sell consulting services then you need this book.  This book covers marketing and selling consulting services in a way that projects more value in the service. If you are selling consulting services on price, you really need this book.

It is very easy to pay thousands of dollars for PR (if you have it), it is easier and less expensive to read this book. It is filled with strategies and tactics for getting publicity. Publicity is a great way to help build your business, it needs so be a part of everyone's arsenal!

The ultimate business card is a book that YOU wrote, it makes you the obvious expert. Guerrilla Marketing for Writers is the perfect guide to help you get your book published and be successful. If you have of are considering writing a book, then you need this one.

Did you know that there is also a Guerrilla Marketing book for Attorneys?  Jay Levinson wrote the book in collaboration with R.W. Lynch Co and even though it is out of print you can still get a copy online from Lynch.  It is a very good book to show how attorneys can mount a full Guerrilla Marketing Attack. I recently gave a talk on Guerrilla Marketing in Nashville TN to the Association of Legal Administrators and  Guerrilla Marketing is perfect for law offices.

Guerrilla Creativity digs deep into the concept of a memes, amongst other things. It is in the queue for me to read. Bigwig Briefs is an excellent refresher book as well as a great "first read" for Guerrilla Marketing. This book is relatively short, but has many power-packed pages that are grouped in a way that the book can be read in short segments, or cover to cover in one sitting. OK, This in not a Guerrilla Marketing book, but it is a must for anyone serious about marketing. Jerry Michaelson was one of the greatest marketing minds  the 20th century and also a world renowned expert on Sun Tzu. This book is the result of being an expert in both areas.

Back in the mid 90s I referred to the Internet as being "the great equalizer, it can make small companies big and big companies small." It did just that and still does today even though most businesses are using it more effectively. Today Guerrilla Marketing is the great equalizer. A solid Guerrilla Marketing Strategy can definitely make a small company big, with big profits. The strategy can help a big company think, act, be nimble and maneuver like a small company.

Doc Pratt and Jay Conrad Levinson relax at the "Birthplace of Guerrilla Marketing" overlooking the San Francisco Bay, in San Rafael CA. They had just completed a four day advanced training event where they worked together to train business leaders from around the world. This intense four day  training event brought business people from as far away as Sydney Australia.

So you have read the books and are now ready to take your Guerrilla Marketing expertise  to the next level, right? The next step is the Guerrilla Marketing Toolkit . The toolkit has 152 pages of laser focused Guerrilla Marketing Strategies and 12 audios from some of the masters of Guerrilla Marketing.
